Roseland Cottage
Winter in New England. The first big snowstorm of the season hits early January in Connecticut. Unlike the northern New England states like New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine; Connecticut doesn’t see snow like this often anymore. A soft white blanket covers the ground, surrounding trees and houses. New Englanders are enjoying their day stuck at home or playing in the freshly fallen snow.
Not me. I pack up my bag, put on my warmest outfit and rush out the door. With no real plan in mind I just start driving. Searching for that perfect shot. I find myself driving for 3 hours, crawling along the highway at 30 mph to avoid sliding into a ditch. I come across a town unfamiliar to me, Woodstock, CT. With nothing but white snow in sight, a flash of color comes into view, The Roseland Cottage.
The Roseland Cottage, a popular place for Gothic Revival Architecture enthusiasts, fans of Historic New England, or anyone looking to admire it’s uniqueness. It offers a vibrant composition to photographers like myself. Combined with a New England snowstorm, the Pink House is seen in full color. The subtle architectural details are highlighted by the snow drift. Many may not have the opportunity to admire the Cottage in such a way. To me it was worth the risk to share my composition.
